This year things will be changing a bit in our Costume and Cosplay Competitions.

Please read the rules and guidelines carefully to see what changes we’ve made.

The first change is our decision to split the Costume Competition and Cosplay Competition into (2) separate events. The ASC
Costume Competition will occur on Saturday and the Cosplay Competition will occur on Sunday. This was done for two main
reasons: (1) It allows cosplayers the ability to enter both contests (either in the same costume or two completely separate
costumes) and (2) It allows for more contestants in each contest, so that we all get to see even more great costumes.

In addition, we will have a Friday night "Halloween" themed Costume Contest. More information will be posted on
what we have planned shortly,

Costume Competition on Saturday

COSTUME COMPETITION SKILL DIVISIONS
In the interest of fairness, and to allow for the best possible
competition among peers, ASC now has separate divisions for
entrants based on skill and experience. This is to ensure that
both novice and experienced costumers have a reasonably
equal chance to win awards in the Costume Competition. ASC
will be adopting the following guidelines for
separate divisions, including:
Master – Journeyman – Novice – Junior/Youth

Master:
(a) Any competitor may enter the Master division

Journeyman:
(a) Professional costumers may not enter as a Journeyman
(b) A contestant who has competed and won in the Master
division at another major competition may not enter in
the Journeyman division.
(c) A contestant who has won Best Journeyman at another
major competition may not enter the Journeyman division.
(d) A contestant who has won more than three major awards in
the Journeyman division at three other major
competitions may not enter in the Journeyman division.
(e) Minor awards may be counted towards placement at the
discretion of the costumer.

Novice:
(a) Professional costumers may not enter the Novice division
(b) A contestant who has competed and won in any division
other than novice at another major competition
may not enter in the Novice division.
(c) A contestant who has won Best in Show or Best Novice at
another major competition may not enter the Novice division.
(d) A contestant who has won more than three major awards at
three other major Competitions (in either the novice division
or a non division event) may not enter in the Novice division.
(e) Minor awards may be counted towards placement at the
discretion of the costumer.

Junior/Youth:
(a) The Junior/Youth division is for any child under age 13
(b) A child wearing a costume designed and built entirely by an
adult should be entered either in the adult’s appropriate skill
division or entered as an exhibition (out of competition piece).
We wish to encourage creativity among the junior division in
an effort to help them grow into accomplished costumers.

A competitor may always choose to compete in a higher
division than that in which the costume competition director
has placed him or her. He or she may not choose to compete in
a lower division

SPECIAL NOTE FOR GROUPS: Each member of the group must
note which skill division they belong to on the costume
competition entry form. Group members may belong to any skill
division. The judges will use their discretion to determine
which skill division to judge the group as a whole.

AWARDS
Best in Show
Masters Award
Con Chair Spotlight
(The convention chairman will choose one cosplayer that he
feels deserves special recognition for any reason)
Best Individual: Journeyman Division
Best Individual: Novice Division
Best Individual: Junior/Youth Division
Best Prop Construction: Journeyman Division
Best Prop Construction: Novice Division
Best Group: Journeyman
Best Group: Novice

In addition, the competition judges reserve the right to
present additional awards based on their own discretion for
suburb achievement in a specific area or for special
recognition

In addition to the juried awards mentioned above, there will be
a pro award for costumers to be judged by their peers
This will be The Costumers Award

The Pro Awards is open only to contestants in the Masters and
Journeyman division and is a way for peers to recognize each
others excellence

RULES FOR COSTUMERS

1. Contestants will be required to come on stage and pose for
the audience. We recommend at least 3 distinct poses from
each entrant for the audience to get the best look at the
costume and for the best photos. Try practicing in front of a
mirror at home for practice. This is your chance to shine!

2. One costume per person.
No separate entries from the same person.

3. All costumes must come from an established anime, video
game, manga, comic book, movie or jrock/jpop artist. Please
bring reference photos or drawings of the original character.

4. All costumes must be entered by their creator. Costumes
may be worn by models, but prizes will be awarded to the
person who created the costume, so both applicants must be
present at the pre-judging and the contest. If you choose to
use a model, be sure to include this
information on your application.

5. Commissioned (paying a person to make your costume) or
store-bought costumes are not allowed. The following items
are allowed to be store bought parts of a costume: Wigs,
Notions & Trims, Belts, Shoes, Jewelry, Most accessories and
Props (which will make you ineligible for a prop award). Other
items will be allowed at the discretion of the judges. Please
email in advance if you have a question regarding a store
bought item. Remember: This is a competition that focuses on
craftsmanship… the more you create, the more impressive the
finished costume is. If you wish to wear a store bought
costume, you can enter as an exhibition entry (non-judged).

6. All contestants must fill out the costume competition
registration form. This is a pre-judged competition. Pre-judging
will occur on Saturday May 24 in 2 separate sessions. There will
be an early morning session from 9:00am – 11:30am open only
to those who have pre-registered for the competition online or
at the show on Friday (at the official cosplay desk). This
session is done so that as few people as possible have to miss
out on any other aspect of the show… remember, we’re all
there to have fun… and nobody really wants to have to wait in
a long line when there’s cool stuff to do. The second session is
for contestants who register at the show, or can’t make the
morning session for some reason. The second session will
occur from 3pm-5pm.

7. All contestants (with the exception of juniors) must submit
reference photos at pre-judging. We need accurate reference
photos or drawings of your character/costume. Remember: It
may be your favorite character from one episode of your
favorite anime that only showed once in Japan… but to the
judges it may be something entirely new. We need in-progress
photos of you making your costume (at least 3 or 4). The higher
the division the more reference we expect. We want to see
your costume from conception to creation. Show us how good
you are… impress us!

8. THE RERUN RULE: If you have won an award (any award) for a
costume at a previous Supercon Event (including Florida
Supercon and Anime Supercon) you may NOT enter the
costume again. It’s time to make a new winning costume. Minor
changes to a costume do not constitute a new costume. If you
are presenting a costume that has won an award at another
major competition – the following rules apply:
(a) Any costume that has won an award at another major
competition prior to 2008 is not allowed. It’s a new year, time
for a new winning costume. You may present the winning
costume as an exhibition entry if you like – but it will not be
eligible for judging.
(b) Any costume that has won an award at another major
competition in 2008 is allowed.

9. No Nudity or risqué costumes. This is a family show and will
contain young contestants. Keep it PG-13

10. No bad behavior. You know what that means. No trash
talking, sabotage or poor sportsmanship. Improper behavior
will get you removed from the competition and possibly the
convention. Remember, we’re all here to have fun.

11. No harmful or potential harmful materials will be allowed.
This includes, but is not limited to: water, cigarettes, flames,
fireworks, silly string and any other substance that can be
fired, launched or dripped.

12.
ASC WEAPONS POLICY: You may pose with your weapon at
the costume competition. No waving of weapons around so
that there can be an accident. It’s never planned for someone
to get hurt… that’s why they call them accidents. This is the
only time allowed at the show where weapons do not need to
be peace bonded. Thru the rest of the show (in other words –
every minute of the show other than when you are on stage for
the costume competition) ALL WEAPONS MUST BE PEACE
BONDED. NO EXCEPTIONS! This includes all swords, guns etc….
anything that looks like a weapon, is a weapon. In addition no
dangerous props are allowed on the convention floor. If it’s a
prop that can hurt someone if you accidently touch them with
it… it’s not allowed.

13. If participants are seen using a weapon inappropriately
(play fighting, waving it around, ect.) they will be automatically
disqualified and might potentially be removed from the con.

14. The number of entries will be capped at 15
0

at the cosplay registration desk

Pre-judging will occur on Saturday N
ovember 1 in 2 separate
sessions. There will be an early morning session from 9:00am –
11:30am open only to those who have pre-registered for the
competition online or at the show on Friday (at the official
cosplay desk). This session is done so that as few people as

wants to have to wait in a long line when there’s cool stuff to
do. The second session is for contestants who register at the

the division the more reference we expect. We want to see
your costume from conception to creation. Show us how good

Pre-judging gives the judges a chance to look over costumes
and ask questions about their construction prior to the
event so the costume's creator should be in attendance with
the model. Judges will be evaluating costumes based on the
following criteria: accuracy, creativity, and technique. Judging
will decide upon the costume winners following pre-judging
and winners will be announced following the contest.

These are the rules and guidelines for the
Cosplay Competition on Sunday

For the ASC Cosplay Competition, Contestants
will be given up to 3 minutes which they can use show off their
costumes and perform a skit. Remember, this is the cosplay
competition, so you will not be judged on your costume alone,
but on the quality of your skit.

After all cosplayers have performed, the judges will take a brief
recess to decide on the winners and will then hand out awards
for the best cosplays. For the cosplay competition there is only
one costume allowed per person. Each entrant may enter as a
single, in a group or both - However you may only enter in one
group - so the max amount of times you can be on stage is
twice.

A group consists of at least 2 people and may have up to 10
members. Entry as a single means just that... 1 person.
